Adam Hall and Julie MacPherson beat eighth seeds Gregory Mairs/Jenny Mairs to make the second round of mixed doubles at the 2024 European Championships in Saarbrucken yesterday.
The Scottish pair won a hard-fought contest, 22-20 13-21 21-16, and will take on local duo Jones Ralfy Jansen/Nguyen Thuc Phuong.
Both Hall and MacPherson also won their doubles. Hall and Alexander Dunn were comfortable winners over Norway’s Torjus Flaatten/Vegard Rikheim, 21-9 21-13, while MacPherson and Ciara Torrance also had a straight-games win over Catyn Ruus/Ramona Uprus of Estonia.
Tuesday featured only paired events.
On the opening day (Monday), the highlight was the clash between Germany’s Fabian Roth and Austria’s Luka Wraber.
On his home ground, Roth emerged victorious against Wraber, clinching the match 21-10 21-16. Roth is set to face Hungary’s Gergo Pytel in his next match on Wednesday.
The European Championships also serve as a platform for younger talents, like Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova and Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova who have both seized the opportunity to advance to the next round.
Seasoned players also enjoyed success, with the Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw, Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba, and Finland’s Kalle Koljonen, 2021 European Championships bronze medallist, all securing spots in the subsequent round.
